Under the patronage of His Excellency Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications (SRTA-City), the city organized a ceremony to celebrate its 25th anniversary (Silver Jubilee) as a beacon of science and innovation. The event was held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, in the main hall of the city.
The celebration was attended by Prof. Dr. Hossam El-Din Saleh Othman, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for Innovation and Scientific Research Affairs; Prof. Dr. Walaa Mohamed Sheta, CEO of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority; Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah, Deputy Director of SRTA-City for Scientific and Research Affairs; as well as many presidents of research centers and universities, vice-presidents of research centers and universities, representatives from the Armed Forces, former directors of SRTA-City and their representatives, deans of the city’s research institutes, several chairpersons of industrial companies, and a wide number of researchers and faculty members from different research centers and universities.
In her speech, Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of SRTA-City, stressed that celebrating 25 years is not only a chance to look back and remember achievements, but also a launch point towards a brighter future. She explained that the world is changing rapidly, and the challenges we face demand more work and innovation. She added that the city continues to implement the strategies of the state and the orientations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, focusing on developing innovative solutions to national challenges in various fields (education, health, energy, water, environmental protection, information technology, agriculture, and food security).
She further pointed out that the city is dedicated to preparing specialized cadres through training programs and workshops, building a new generation of researchers and scientists capable of contributing to sustainable development. The city also works on strengthening collaboration among research institutions inside Egypt and internationally, exchanging expertise and knowledge, advancing scientific research, and providing consultancy services to government institutions, the private sector, and industry in various fields—helping to improve performance and efficiency.
Moreover, SRTA-City promotes innovation and entrepreneurship by providing an incubating environment for startups, offering technical and financial support for researchers and entrepreneurs to create new job opportunities and, consequently, boost economic growth. The city also participates in and launches initiatives to raise awareness of societal issues, enhancing public scientific knowledge and ensuring science plays an active role in improving quality of life.
Prof. Dr. Hossam El-Din Saleh Othman, Deputy Minister for Innovation and Scientific Research Affairs, emphasized the importance of SRTA-City’s role in fostering innovation and serving society, stressing that scientific research is the driving engine of sustainable development.
The celebration included the screening of a film about the city’s 25-year journey since its establishment, along with honoring the city’s former directors in recognition of their devoted efforts and strategic vision that positioned the city on the regional and international research map. Commemorative shields were presented to them in acknowledgment of their pivotal role in building and developing this scientific landmark.
In addition, several distinguished staff members, as well as affiliates of the city who assumed national and international leadership positions, were honored. The event also featured a cultural performance by the Cultural Palaces Choir, a tour of a mini-exhibition showcasing key research outputs of the city’s researchers, offering attendees the chance to see practical applications of scientific research and its role in serving society and addressing sustainable development needs.
The program also included a field tour of the city’s Cloud Computing Center, as part of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s efforts to support digital infrastructure and enhance the use of advanced technology in scientific research.
At the conclusion of the celebration, Prof. Dr. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif reaffirmed the city’s commitment to continuing its journey toward further accomplishments, noting that SRTA-City will remain a vital hub for supporting innovation and entrepreneurship. She added that the city will strengthen partnerships between academia and industry to transform research ideas into value-added products and services.
It is worth mentioning that the city’s origins date back to 1993, when Presidential Decree No. 85 of 1993 was issued to establish the General Authority of Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technological Applications. The aim was to develop modern technologies, apply advanced scientific methods across production and service fields, identify key development challenges, and propose appropriate solutions.
The authority occupies 225 acres in New Borg El-Arab City, west of Alexandria. According to the establishment decree, it was designed to include 12 research institutes and technology centers, to be built in phases according to a scientific plan. Currently, the city comprises five research institutes and two technology centers.
In 2011, the Head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces issued Decree No. 85 of 2011 (dated May 9, 2011), changing the name from “The General Authority of Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technological Applications” to “The General Authority of the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications.”
