the City of Scientific Research & Technological Applications : A beacon for launching sustainable development through emerging technologies

Under the Auspices of Prof. Muhammed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research, and Prof. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Director of the City of Scientific Research & Technological Applications (SRTA-City), the City organized the activities of the of 3rd Scientific Conference under the theme:

"Emerging Technologies & Their Relationship to Sustainable Development"

The conference was held from November 10 to 11, 2025, at the City's headquarters in New Borg El Arab City – Alexandria, and chaired by Prof. Abeer El-Sayed Abdel Wahab, Dean of the Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology Research Institute at the City, and was attended by Professor. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah, Vice Director of the City for Scientific and Research Affairs

The conference saw the attendance of numerous Heads of Research Centers, University Presidents, Vice Heads of Research Centers, Vice Presidents of Universities, Deans of Research Institutes and Faculties, Chairmen of Industrial Company Boards, and Research and Teaching Staff from various research centers and universities.

Professor. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif affirmed that the conference represents a pivotal meeting point where the City seeks to integrate scientific research outcomes into development strategies.

She added that, especially in light of the challenges facing the world, adopting emerging technologies has become not just an option but a strategic necessity to ensure a more sustainable and prosperous future for our coming generations.

This conference aims to highlight the increasing importance of emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Nanotechnology, Renewable Energy, Biotechnology, and other fields, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Professor. Abeer Abdel Wahab pointed out that the conference is a leading platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences among researchers, academics, and investors.

She also focused on highlighting how technological innovations can be employed as effective tools to address global and local challenges. The conference aims to:

·        Explore emerging technologies and evaluate their role in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

·        Enhance the integration between research and application by encouraging universities and research centers to transform innovations into practical solutions.

·        Strengthen partnerships among academic, industrial, and governmental sectors to support green innovation and sustainable development.

·        Empower young researchers and entrepreneurs to use advanced technologies in tackling developmental and environmental challenges.

·        Highlight successful local, regional, and international experiences where technology has positively impacted society and the environment.

During the conference activities, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the City of Scientific Research & Technological Applications and Horizon Chemical for Specialty Chemicals.

The MoU included: conducting joint applied research and providing training services, utilizing the ideas, laboratory capabilities, or equipment possessed by each party, with the aim of enriching the research and applied processes.

The conference activities included the participation of 30 speakers from various Egyptian and foreign universities and research centers, as well as a group of industrialists.

The lectures varied between physical attendance and online presentations, covering several fields including: (Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Entrepreneurship, Medical Research, Food, Soil, and the Environment). This variety created an opportunity to formulate practical and implementable recommendations.

Furthermore, an exhibition was held featuring 50 prototypes from students of different universities and schools, in addition to a scientific poster exhibition that included 27 posters by researchers from various academic levels and students from different Egyptian universities. This enriched the scientific dialogue and enhanced opportunities for cooperation between the different universities.

The best displayed posters were honored, and certificates of appreciation and symbolic rewards were presented to encourage students on the methodology of presenting research and creating posters, and to train them on participating in international conferences through a competition for the best posters and prototypes.

During the closing session, Professor. Mona Mahmoud Abdel Latif, Professor. Mohamed Rashad Abdel Fattah, and Professor. Abeer Abdel Wahab reviewed the most important recommendations of the conference, which are as follows:

·        Emphasizing the importance of supporting and funding applied scientific research in the fields of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Nanotechnology, Robotics, Blockchain, and Renewable Energy, due to their pivotal role in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

·        Highlighting the importance of integrating emerging technologies into development plans and strategies.

·        Stressing the necessity of expanding the scope of cooperation between universities, research centers, and industrial institutions—locally, regionally, and internationally—to ensure the exchange of experiences, the transfer of technology and knowledge, and the activation of partnerships for development.

·        Empowering entrepreneurs and startups by providing a supportive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship in new technological fields, through financial and legislative incentives, and establishing specialized incubators and business accelerators.

·        Utilizing modern technology in environmental protection, rationalizing resource consumption, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting the transition towards a sustainable green economy.

·        Continuous community awareness of the impact of technology on improving quality of life, and calling upon civil society organizations for active participation in achieving sustainable technological transformation.
