Vision
To develop scientific researches and extension programs in the field of plant protection against the invading pathogens and pests, and reduce the use of the harmful chemical pesticides, as well as to develop applied researches in the field of molecular biology of plants, pests, and pathogens to meet the needs of the agricultural community and the environment in Egypt.
Mission
Our mission is studying and control of plant diseases and pests affecting the economic crops in Egypt, especially arid areas, and to develop advanced technologies in order to increase their yield production. Detection, characterization, and identification of the plant pathogens and pests attacking crops in cultivated lands, particularly arid ones, including fungal, bacterial, viral, nematode, and insect–borne diseases, studying the relationships between the plants, pathogens and pests at the molecular and biological levels as well as the gene-gene interactions between the pathogen or the pest and the plant, maximizing the role of biological and natural control of plant diseases and pests, as well as production of biocides to reduce the use of chemical pesticides on a semi-industrial scale, studying impact(s) of environmental variables on the biodiversity of the harmful and beneficial organisms, as well as their relationships with the plant, developing diagnostic kits to detect the plant pathogens and pests. Research fields include agricultural microbes including fungi, bacteria, and viruses, economic entomology, agricultural nematology and acarology, biological control, chemical pesticides, especially at nano-scales, diagnostic methods for detection of pathogens, pests and plant parasites, based on either proteomic or genomic structure, studying gene-gene interactions between plants, insects, parasites and microorganisms, studying the pathogen and host at genomic level to detect the defense and pathogenicity-related genes.
